Alendronate is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis (thinning of the bone) in women after menopause.
This medicine may also be used to increase bone mass in men who have osteoporosis, and in men and women to prevent and treat osteoporosis caused by long-term use of corticosteroids (cortisone-like medicine).
It may also be used to treat Paget's disease of the bone.
Alendronic Acid is a bisphosphonate. It works by suppressing the activity of osteoclasts, cells that cause destruction of bone. This strengthens the bones and minimizes the risk of fractures.

- Hypersensitivity
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Heartburn
- Difficulty with swallowing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Loss of appetite
- Loosening of the teeth
- Joint or muscle pain
- Swelling of ankles or feet
- Flu like symptoms
This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary.
This medicine may cause severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain.
Treatment with Alendronate may increase the risk of thigh bone fracture.
This medicine is not recommended for use in children or adolescents.
