Esomeprazole is used to treat conditions where there is too much acid in the stomach.
It is used to treat duodenal and gastric ulcers, erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition wherein the stomach produces too much acid.
Esomeprazole is also used with antibiotics to treat ulcers that are caused by the H. pylori bacteria.
This medicine is also used to prevent stomach ulcers and stomach irritation in patients taking NSAIDs for long periods of time.
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach which helps in relief of acid related indigestion and heartburn.

This medicine has been associated with an increased incidence of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea in some patients.

Use of this medicine for durations longer than medically recommended can cause skin disorders by affecting the immune system.
Use of this medicine increases the susceptibility to infections from bacteria.
Use of high dose of Esomeprazole for prolonged duration may increase the risk of bone fractures especially in older patients and women.
Long-term treatment with Esomeprazole may decrease the absorption of Vitamin B-12 in the body.
