SALT COMPOSITION
Camphor + Menthol + Phenylephrine + Naphazoline Hydrochloride 1.00 %w/v + Chlorpheniramine Maleate 0.01 %w/v
Camphor

It is used in products such as Vicks VapoRub. Camphor is applied to the skin to relieve pain and reduce itching.It is also applied to the skin on the neck and chest so that it can be breathed in to reduce the urge to cough. 

Uses

Camphor belongs to the class of medicines called rubefacients/antitussives. When applied to the skin, it increases blood flow and local temperature of the affected area which suppresses and temporarily relieves pain sensations. It also eases cough, nasal/throat irritation by moistening air passages when used along with steam.

Precautions / Concerns

Do not use it on broken or injured skin as the body could absorb too much amount causing toxicity.

Menthol
Uses
Used to treat pruritis, cough, strains, sprains, bruises and pain.
Side Effects
Allergic reaction such as swelling, rashes, burning, irritation, hypersensitivity, sensation of skin and stomach bleeding.
Precautions / Concerns
Avoid if patients are allergic to menthol. Do not take with warfarin, NSAID Drugs, aspirin. Consult with the doctor during lactation and pregnancy.
Phenylephrine

Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant used to relieve nasal blockage caused by sinusitis, cold, allergy, or hay fever.

It belongs to a class of drugs called vasopressors, and it works by reducing swelling of the blood vessels in the nose.

 It will not cure the cause of the symptoms or speed the recovery.

 

Uses

Phenylephrine is a decongestant that is used to treat stuffy nose and sinus congestion caused by the common cold, hay fever, or other allergies.

Precautions / Concerns
  • You should not use medicines that contain phenylephrine if you have used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the past 14 days because of a potentially dangerous drug interaction.
  • Nonprescription cough and cold combination products, including those that contain phenylephrine, can cause serious side effects or death in young children.
  • Oral phenylephrine should be taken with food
  • Phenylephrine can make you restless, so don't take it too close to bedtime
  • Do not use this medicine without doctor's advice if you are pregnant or breast feeding
  • Smoking may worsen the effect; therefore use of tobacco should be avoided.

 

Naphazoline Hydrochloride
  • Naphazoline is a decongestant.It is known as a sympathomimetic (alpha receptor agonist) that works in the eye to decrease congestion.
  • Naphazoline Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of naphazoline, an imidazole derivative and a direct-acting sympathomimetic amine with vasoconstrictive properties. Upon ocular administration, naphazoline hydrochloride exerts its effect by acting on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the arterioles of the conjunctiva to produce vasoconstriction, resulting in decreased conjunctival congestion and diminished itching, irritation and redness.
Uses
  • Naphazoline is used to relieve redness, puffiness, and itchy/watering eyes due to colds, allergies, or eye irritations (smog, swimming, or wearing contact lenses).
  • Some brands of naphazoline eye drops also contain other ingredients. Lubricants (such as glycerin, hypromellose, or polyethylene glycol 300) help protect the eyes from more irritation.
  • Zinc sulfate, an astringent, helps reduce redness and irritation.
Side Effects
  •  Stinging, redness, widened pupils, or blurred vision may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
  •  Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: dizziness, nausea, sweating, drowsiness, weakness, nervousness, worsening redness/itching/swelling in or around the eyes.
  •  Tell your doctor right away if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: eye pain, other vision problems, headache, decrease in body temperature, irregular heartbeat.
  •  A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
Precautions / Concerns
  •  Before using naphazoline, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.
  •  This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as preservatives like benzalkonium chloride), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

  •  Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: heart problems (e.g., high blood pressure), glaucoma, diabetes, eye infection/injury, overactive  thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
  •  After you apply this drug, your vision may become temporarily blurred. This drug may also make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
  •  Caution is advised when using this drug in children because they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially severe drowsiness and severely decreased body temperature.
  •  During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  •  It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Chlorpheniramine Maleate

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic medication. When your body is exposed to an allergen (pollen, animal dander, house dust etc.), it produces a chemical called histamine. This causes watery eyes, runny or blocked nose, sneezing, skin rashes, itching etc. Chlorpheniramine Maleate works by blocking the action of histamine, thereby relieving these symptoms.

  • Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that is used to prevent or treat allergic reactions like hay fever or urticaria caused by pollen, dust, or animal hair.
  • Chlorpheniramine is used to treat runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes caused by allergies, the common cold, or the flu.
Side Effects
  • Sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Jaundice
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
Precautions / Concerns
  • Use of this medicine in children under the age of 2 years is not recommended.
  • Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. chlorpheniramine is usually taken only for a short time until your symptoms clear up.
