How to Quit Smoking

Quit or not to quit that is the lingering question for most of the smokers. Smoking is addictive and it is almost impossible not to succumb to the tobacco cravings. It is indeed difficult to give up on cigarettes at one go, but if you set your mind to it and slowly and steadily start reducing your tobacco consumption, you will eventually turn from a smoker to a non-smoker.

Here are easy and simple ways, which will genuinely help you to quit smoking.

1. Start with smoking light: If you have been puffing on a cigarette for years then try to reduce your daily intake of cigarettes. Set a monthly target. For week one reduce your cigarette puffing to half. If you have been smoking 10 cigarettes for one week reduce it to 5 per day. In the next week, reduce it to 3 per day and so on and so forth. By the end of the month you should be smoking 1 cigarette per day.

2. Control your urges: Once you are smoking one cigarette a day try not to pick up the cigarette at all. Remember no urge lasts for more than 10 minutes. Whenever the desire to take a drag arises, try shifting your mind to other things. Go for a short run, or try the snacking on small meals like nuts or chocolates. You can also try indulging yourself in a new activity or something you like to do in free time. If you are a music enthusiast, then turn on your favorite music when the urge to smoke strikes and try re-focusing your mind.

3. Nicotine patches and gums: They are great companions when you are trying to quit. So the next time you want to pick up a cigarette, pick the nicotine gum instead. You can also consult a doctor to take a prescribed medication of  bupropion (Zyban) and varenicline (Chantix). These will keep your cravings in control.

4. Avoid the smoking triggers: Most of us smoke when in stress. It is best to avoid such situations. Even if you find yourself in stressful situations try not to give in.  Gulp down a glass of water rather than buying your next cigarette. If you are in habit of smoking while thinking or while having a drink, pick up a pen and purse it between your lips. You can also keep the pen between your fingers till the urge passes away.

5. Time Delay: Whenever you think you want to smoke, try to delay. You will see that the craving will automatically go after a few minutes.

6. Do it for your loved ones: Keep on reminding yourself that you are quitting smoking to lead a healthy lifestyle so that you can stay longer to take care of your family and friends.
